: Couch Potato
Directed by: Catherine Hardwicke
Starring: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart
A Vampire movie that is not really for Vampire movie lovers. This is not a horror film that satisfies the blood-lust of that type of movie-goer. It is a teen love story based on the book by Stephanie Meyer. If you are a fan of the book, the film is somewhat of a disappointment. The screenplay seems rushed and leaves out some of the better parts of the book . The special effects are, at times, cheesy but the film is full of eye candy for the young teen to young adult audience. As I sat in the theater, I heard the girls gasp when Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) first appeared on screen.
The story about a human girl named Bella (Kristen Stewart) who falls in love with Edward, a vampire, offers a new spin on vampirism. Don’t expect too many screams of fright. There are some “bad” vampires to offer some tension, but the film is not all that scary. No, you won’t jump out of your seat, but you may feel a certain nostalgia because Twilight is, at heart, about the all consuming power of first love and what we will do for it. That is what makes the book and the film a success.
