: Hot Potato
Directed by: Michael Mann
Starring: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight
Two legendary actors finally face off, and it’s a spectacular show! Two brilliant and obsessive minds, on opposite sides of the law, collide as Lt. Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), a violent crimes detective, pursues a very organized and efficient crew of robbers. Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) is the crew’s mastermind, who seems to outsmart Hanna at every turn. Both men are single-minded and very good at what they do. Each has chosen a path very different from the other, yet their paths converge. Hanna lives an all consuming life dedicated to apprehending violent criminals, while McCauley remains detached from the world, able to pick up and leave the moment any ‘heat’ threatens his survival. When they finally meet face to face it is for a little mental sparring first, setting up the events to come, which I think might be one of the most exciting robbery shoot-outs ever filmed. New York usually seems to get all the best action, but the streets of L.A. can claim this sensational showdown. The film is long, but it kept my attention and never felt overdone. They truly did turn up the heat on this potato and it's baked to perfection.
